Share Tweet The simple act of hitching your trailer to your vehicle can be one of the most frustrating parts of a trip. Most people just have someone spot them and give directions from behind. Fortunately, there are a number of products on the market that are designed to assist with hitching your trailer. All of these products claim to make hitching your trailer a breeze, but which ones can back up their claims? All of these systems do work with most any trailer, and each one of these products are designed so that a trailer can be hitched by just one person. Sounds simple in principle, but does it work? One real world tester actually tried this system out with his wife driving his wife who had never previously hitched their trailer.

Oct 29,  · Backing under a gooseneck can be done several ways to make it easier: You can do what I do and essentially stand up in the cab of the truck. That is, back up within three feet or so of the trailor and then use the tips of your feet to drive while you lean way over the back seat to look at the ball.

Gooseneck Hitch mounting to bed bolt locations? A cousin of mine has a ’91 with a underbed hitch that was custom made. His uses the old style gooseneck ball that you slip in the hole and put a pin underneath the truck. This plate is only 12″ square and fits around the ball when in place. Pull the pin, ball and wear plate and he has a flat bed just like mine. I once thought that it was always better to build everything myself that I needed.

Then I realized that with the time I spent building one project, I kept pushing others back. Then nobody EVER figures in the cost of their personal labor rate for a custom project. Then your stuck working on that one project instead of working on other things.

I do recommend viewing youtube videos along with using the installation instructions to make things easier. I installed it without a vehicle lift but did jack up the truck and put it on jack stands to remove the rear wheels. I did use and recommend a torque wrench to torque all fittings. Be sure to follow the installation process in the order written so that all parts properly fall properly into place.

Overall I highly recommend this hitch.

Jun 18,  · Do you climb in the truck bed every time and connect/disconnect the latch or hook-up chains? I’ve always had a standard tongue pull or RV style 5th wheel, now I have a horse trailer that will primarily be used by my wife.

Love the fact that the bed is flat when removed. Have a little trouble removing it from the bed of the truck due to the weight but that is one of the reasons I purchased it because of the sturdy construction. To solve that I installed a hoist in garage. It was so easy to install. Easy to hooks up and unhooks to the fifth wheel. It seems to be very strong. I tell everyone about this hitch.

Called the factory and they sent plates for the bed of truck for the hitch to set on,free. I would like to see just alittle more paint on some of the edges. I have had other brand hitchs but this one is the best so far. When you install this unit you will need a torque wrench every time and to remove it you will need a good quality wrench, a adjustable wrench won’t work well.

That is the only draw back I see. I try to leave it in most of the camping season.

Unlike regular hitches that extend from the back of the towing vehicle, gooseneck hitches, and the closely-related fifth wheel hitches, are anchored through the bed of a pickup truck. Gooseneck hitches use a hitch ball to lock into place, while fifth wheel hitches use a wheel-shaped plate to accomplish the connection. Besides their strength, gooseneck hitches are also popular because the types of trailers they pull are able to make tighter turns than the ones that connect off the back of the towing vehicle.

Depending on the model, gooseneck hitches generally cost a couple hundred dollars and an installation kit may or may not be included in that price. Some are easier to install on certain makes and models than others, so if you’re the do-it-yourself type, you may want to take that into consideration. On the next page, we’ll look at a few more factors to take into account while choosing a gooseneck hitch.

Limited lifetime for ball mount 1-Year limited for scale gauge This Weigh Safe ball mount has an easy-to-use, built-in scale that measures your trailer’s tongue weight every time you tow. If the scale indicates that your tongue weight is too low or too high, you can adjust it before you head out so that you can complete your journey with the peace of mind that your setup is safe. What is Tongue Weight? Tongue weight TW refers to the weight that the fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle.

Tongue weight is typically 10 percent – and should not exceed 15 percent – of your gross trailer weight. For example, a 10, lb trailer should have a tongue weight between 1, lbs and 1, lbs. You can adjust the tongue weight of your trailer by removing or adding cargo, or redistributing the load on the trailer. The tongue weight should not exceed the capacity of your tow vehicle, your hitch, or any of your towing components. Why is Tongue Weight So Important? Simply put, too little tongue weight can cause trailer sway and too much tongue weight can cause the tow vehicle to perform poorly.

You may have difficulty steering, gaining traction, or braking when driving a setup that has too much weight pushing down on the rear of the vehicle.

In the Cabana Don’t do it. A few years ago we bought a 30 foot Holiday Rambler that had been converted to a goose neck, because my wife’s truck has a goose neck hitch in it. It towed terrible very jerky, at times I was expecting to look back and the trailer gone, but I really wasn’t sure how it should have towed and figured everything was fine as the previous owner had the good neck install and it was super beefy Then on day we had pulled about 50 miles to a state park, and after we unhitched I was looking at the hitch on the trailer, something seemed wrong, but my wife said it was just the angle I was looking at it.

After a couple drinks, I got looking at it, it was ripping the hitch box out of the frame. Luckily we had some friends fairly close by, and I had just sold my Miller Bobcat to him. He came over and we welded it as good as we could, very hard to get to where we needed to get without making a major mess. We limped home, I figured it was a total loss then I got looking closer.
