With all the fat, sweet, snarling Les Paul tone that purists love, the Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro IV sports a mahogany body with a thick maple cap for the perfect blend of warmth and clarity. The top is finished in high-gloss lacquer, while the back, sides and neck have a smooth satin finish that feels great and lets the wood resonate fully.
Period-Correct Pickguard The cream-colored pickguard has been a Les Paul staple dating back to the models of the late s and the early s. Many players, however, removed the pickguard from their Les Pauls to show off the beauty of the flame maple tops, prompting Gibson to stop installing the pickguard altogether. During the s and s, Gibson began reinstalling the pickguard in the factory, and the Les Pauls from this era once again arrived in stores bearing the classic, cream-colored pickguard.

But, with more than 75 years of shipping records in the Gibson books, and dozens of variations on numerical schemes used over the years, serial numbers sometimes do little to shed light on the origin of a mysterious Gibson. With vintage Gibsons selling at auction for as much as half a million dollars, Davidson will sometimes roll up his sleeves and poke around in the ledgers, but only as time allows. The earliest volumes contain hundreds of yellowed pages covered front and back with rows of handwritten numbers.
It can take Davidson several hours to locate a specific serial number, if he can find it at all. Even then, there may be four other guitars—of all different models—with the same number sequence. Serial numbers can pull up multiple guitars from multiple years. To combat the problem, the company upped its serial number sequence last year from eight digits to nine.
For the most part, it looks real. But there are some obvious indicators—if it starts with a five, for instance.

Now, for the first time ever, Gibson Custom and Eric Clapton have teamed up to revisit one of the most legendary Les Paul Standards, a guitar produced in honor of an iconic instrument lost to the public eye for nearly 45 years. The Gibson Custom Shop Eric Clapton Les Paul has been created with the close personal cooperation of the artist, and with painstaking reference to available photographs.
Clearly there are special challenges in creating a guitar based on one that no longer exists, but this strictly Limited Edition instrument accurately represents what Eric Clapton personally feels his Les Paul should be. The Eric Clapton Les Paul was produced in extremely restricted numbers: A one-piece neck made from quarter-sawn mahogany is glued in with the long-tenon joint of the period, for outstanding resonance and sustain.
Another resource for IDing and dating guitars is Gibson’s computer database, which catalogues scores of serial numbers from on through the present. “It doesn’t always date the guitar,” says Davidson.
Originally the Epiphone models were made in the same factory as the Gibson guitars, by the same craftspeople using the same materials and often with the same features as Gibson models, but manufacturing of most of the Epiphone instruments was switched to Asia sometime around Today, Gibson primarily uses the Epiphone brand as their high value, lower priced overseas-built alternative to their top tier Gibson USA models.
All Epiphone models sold in the United States are subjected to a 15 point inspection process, and are “set up” in the USA by trained Gibson employees at their Nashville facility. Around , Les Paul, a legendary musician and musical electronics and solidbody guitar pioneer, created one of his early solid bodied guitars after-hours in the Epiphone factory out of a 4X4″ piece of wood.
On to this he later attached side “wings” from a Epiphone hollowbody guitar in order to give it a more conventional look. This guitar, known as “The Log”, was later shown to Gibson executives, who initially passed on the idea of building them, but they changed their mind within a couple of years and the Les Paul Model guitar as we know it today was first released in These early “gold top” models were later joined by the black Les Paul Customs, and then the sunburst “Standards” of the late s.
Several Epiphone Les Paul models are very close to the classic Gibson models upon which they are based, while other models are designed with different features to keep the entry price low for students and budget-minded players. For example, some Epiphone Les Paul models use bolt-on neck construction and “slab” bodies which are generally less expensive to manufacture, while others stick with tradition and have arched maple tops and glued-in necks like their high-end Gibson counterparts.
At the mid and upper range of the Epiphone Les Paul range, most guitars retain practically all of the other essential Les Paul features — two humbucking or P90 single coil pickups, two volume and two tone controls, a three-way selector switch, body and neck binding, In addition to such long-running models as the Les Paul Standard, Studio and Custom, Epiphone has also released various artist signature and limited edition Les Paul models over the years.

This guitar, and another version that is documented in photographs of The Who on stage in Holland, 10th March, , are distinctive because they both have three holes on the body where the tailpiece has been removed – this version has three holes that form a triangle on the body whereas the other version has three holes in a straight line below the bridge. Photographs taken by Robert Ellis at the Odeon Theatre in Newcastle on 6th November, , the second of three nights in Newcastle during the Fallout Shelter Tour, show Pete Townshend prior to going on stage holding the guitar in this Lot [see photograph above] and photographs from the same night show Townshend on stage with the guitar [see front cover photograph].

I do not see it as different from any other product – where there is a demand, someone is going to fill it.
Stevie’s guitar is one of the most easily identifiable, famous guitars in history, and folks other than Fender have made dozens of replicas of Number One at prices from several hundred to five thousand dollars. Fender’s Custom Shop employs some of the best craftsman in the business, and it is not unusual for their guitars to sell for thousands of dollars due to the number of hours spent handcrafting each guitar.
It is my understanding that sales of the Number One guitars worked like this: Fender sold them to their top dealers in this case by a lottery system due to the high demand who can resell them to customers or not. For the Clapton , my understanding is that orders were taken on a specific date from Fender dealers on a first-come first-served basis.
In both cases, the customers who were successful in getting a guitar were those who paid for them in advance.

Gibson USA serial numbers are pretty straightforward. It’s the Custom Shop numbering that is so very weird. Both Nashville and Memphis have their own numbering systems and styles.
In fact, it was likely that your parents were steering you in the direction of accordion lessons. The Beatles — and of course others — stopped all that. Suddenly, electric guitars were 1 on every kids Christmas list. Companies that had been manufacturing Accordions for 20 years, retooled for electric guitars. EKO was at the forefront, and within 2 years they were shipping over 10, electric guitars to USA per year.
Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, Rickenbacker… these were all too expensive for our parents to buy for us. Hence, the foreign guitar manufacturers gave us what we wanted. Tip of the iceberg! A nifty Fender Musicmaker. I took it to the local luthier and asked him to refinish it, to remove the awful sticker. The Airline Guitars were sold through Montgomery Ward. Though similar in appearance to the popular Gibson ES semi-hollow guitar, the ES is a little bit different in construction and a whole lot different in sound. While the is a semi-hollow guitar that is, the center part of the body is a solid block and the wings of the guitar are hollow , the is a fully hollow thinline guitar.
Also, the features two humbucking pickups, and the features two single-coil P pickups. The complete openness of the body creates an wider sound with bright ringing textures and vibrant overtones. The body is made from combination three-ply maple and poplar, while the mahogany neck includes a maple spline all connected with a sturdy mortise and tenon joint.
The Gibson Les Paul and SG Standards are classic models that share a common heritage, as well as most of their essential ingredients. But they also have their differences, and while one can often sub for the other, each has its distinct personality.
History[ edit ] The Gibson Les Paul was introduced in , and was originally made with a mahogany body and a 1″ thick maple cap, mahogany neck with rosewood fret board and two P pickups. The guitar was only available in a gold finish. In late , a more luxurious version was introduced, most probably on specific request by Les Paul himself, as he wanted a more luxurious and classy looking guitar. He requested a black guitar as he wanted it to “look like a tuxedo”.
Nicknamed the Black Beauty, the guitar had a mahogany body and neck, ebony fret board, and mother of pearl block markers inlays in the fret board. The “Split Diamond” inlay on the headstock was taken from the carved archtop Super , which was the top of the Gibson line. The pickups were a P in the bridge position and an Alnico V pickup, newly designed by Seth Lover , in the neck position. The new Custom also shipped with a different case from the Standard, using a black and gold case instead of the brown and pink case that was the top-of-the-line case for the Les Paul Standard models.
Most Customs have three PAFs, though there are a small number that have the traditional two-pickup configuration. By , Gibson had replaced the Kluson tuners with Grover Rotomatics. It is this configuration that remained until the guitar was discontinued in , replaced by the new double cutaway body Les Paul model. There are a small number of Les Paul Customs that were made with the single cutaway body before the transition to the new, SG-style body was complete.
