Tach/Dwell meter–how to hook up?

Most people ask if I can explain the RV electrical system in simple to understand terms. The electrical system in your RV can seem complex and confusing until you have a basic understanding of how it works. Your RV actually has three separate electrical systems. We are primarily concerned with the volt DC and volt AC coach systems. The majority of campgrounds you go to will provide you with an external volt electric source to plug into. Your RV has a heavy-duty power cord that is normally about 25 feet long.

We have often talked about putting in a 30 amp breaker and RV style outlet for the camper at the house. Add to that any other electrical devices in your camper and you quickly see why a 30 amp electric supply is needed. Most standard household plugs only supply 15 amps, so using a common adaptor to allow the 30 amp RV plug to be inserted into a standard household 15 amp outlet may be quickly overloaded.

While this adaptor may be safe to use in limited situations when you closely monitor what devices are being powered, I think the installation of a 30 amp RV style outlet. It was only when our Air Conditioning went out at the house that we “needed” the camper to use as an “air conditioned lifeboat”!!

Our aim for the camper van electrical system is to be able to do without electrical hookups indefinitely, and to be able to be away from any power source for a day or two without much sun and without having to run the engine.

They would reduce weight and size by quite a bit over the lead acid batteries, but are still expensive, and would likely take some careful homework to get right. It provides for up to 12 DC circuits and up to 4 AC circuits. This looks like another good option for a combined AC and DC distribution panel… Battery Isolator This gadget allows the van alternator to be used to charge the house battery, while preventing the van starting battery from being drained by powering loads in the RV.

It isolates the van starting battery from the house battery when the ignition switch is off so that RV loads only discharge the house battery. The idea is that even if you discharge the house battery overnight, the van starting battery will still be fully charged. This relay based unit appeals to me because: I guess this could be good if your starting battery is low, but maybe not so good if your house battery is low? In hindsight, a unit with a lower amperage rating would have been fine.

The unit is inline with a 50 amp circuit breaker, so anything over 50 amps would probably be fine.

How to Repair a Camper Travel Trailer Electrical System

The receptacle is usually marked “Travel Trailer Use Only”. The receptacle is wired with three wires from the breaker panel and requires a single, dedicated 30 amp breaker. The three wires are one V black , a ground usually bare or green and a neutral white. The terminals on the back of the receptacle will be marked with G and perhaps a green screw , W and perhaps a silver screw and maybe B and perhaps a brass screw but in many cases, the last terminal is not marked.

The neutral goes to the side marked ‘W’ for white and the black hot wire goes to the remaining screw as shown.

We’ve all heard about how hooking up an RV on too long or too skinny of an extension cord can force its appliances to run on volts instead of the regular.

It goes into much greater and well illustrated detail. I’m interested in covering those things that can drive U Nutz. The RV chassis is isolated from ground by definition. Metal leveling jacks and such, mounted on the vehicle frame do not make an adequate ground contact. Therefore, in an RV, you always want to have a “floating” neutral, where the neutral and vehicle ground never come together.

When you bond the neutral and ground together in an RV, you have a “floating” ground rather than neutral and this will result in nutty things happening. Combined with ANY receptacle at campground post or in RV having reversed polarity, it may result in YOU becoming the path to ground in certain conditions like standing on wet ground and touching metal vehicle parts. Usually you just feel a slight “tingle,” but it can get serious. One result often seen is a dog, chained to a metal bumper, bouncing up and down.

The above electrical faults result in breakers breaking and Ground Fault Interrupters GFI’s that don’t GFI and pity the poor drunk who stands alongside the RV, with his hand leaning on the metal frame, and takes aleak This shouldn’t happen if there’s no reverse polarity at ANY receptacle, because the ground wire is still grounded and does not become a hot wire by the fact that current of near-zero voltage is flowing in it.

So, then, everything should still work OK and normal. The dog would still be happy right up to the time you drive off down the highway — dragging the whole affair — dog and all. I’ve seen this happen. However, the whole purpose of the third ground is to be a fail safe, so current is not allowed to normally flow in this wire.

Tester k I think that, as brad says, this needs either separate neutrals 5 conductors or an upstream double-pole breaker. You could use a single pole breaker, but you’d have to size the conductors and overcurrent protection at 50 amperes. You would need to have a ganged 30A breaker at the upstream breaker panel, as this is a multi-wire branch circuit. If you go this route you will definitely need to have a 20A breaker at the hookup panel to protect the outlet and anything connected to it.

You wouldn’t need to have another 30A breaker for the RV outlet as the ganged breaker would be enough protection. It doesn’t usually hurt to have an extra one though.

How to Install a 30 Amp Breaker & Plug

If you have room for 2 or 4 batteries, you might want to consider using 6v golf cart batteries. They are true deep cycle batteries and will last a lot longer than most common 12v batteries in your RV. Golf cart batteries have a higher capacity than group 24 and 27 batteries If you decide to change over to the 6v golf cart batteries, you must make an important wiring change.

Most rigs that have 2 or more 12v batteries have them wired in parallel.

The bottom pipe, which is hooked to the PSI output of the pump, will have PSI all along its length, while the top pipe, which drains back into the pump, will have 0 PSI along its entire length. The pressure within each pipe will be equal throughout its length.

This is exactly what happens to an electrical outlet in your home or RV. The pressure of the water will cause a current to flow through that small turbine to power your blender making a frozen drink of your choice. In this case we have really big pipes carrying the water to the little turbine, so the small amount of flow current required only causes a 1 PSI drop in pressure in each pipe. Small Pipes Equal Big Pressure Loss Imagine, however, what would happen if your plumber went cheap and installed really small feeder pipes to your turbine.

Your pump would still be creating PSI of pressure, but the current flow would be restricted a lot by the too-small feeder pipes. Consequently, rather than losing just 1 PSI of pressure, you would now lose 10 PSI of pressure with the same current flow as before.
